Reputable Plumber: 7 Tips to Help Find a Reputable Plumber

It is my view that plumbers have gained an unfair reputation over the past few decades. Not many people like calling in a plumber. The work they do is expensive, and it always seems to cost more than quoted and take a longer time than promised. Plus, much like car repair shops, most people do not understand the work actual work that a plumber is doing.

It is incredibly easy for a plumber to rip off a homeowner and overcharge them for work that did not need to be done in the first place. Watch an episode of the popular TV program called ‘Cowboy Builders’ if you don’t know what I mean.

Electric Underfloor Heating: How Does Electric Underfloor Heating Work?

Electric Underfloor Heating: How Does Electric Underfloor Heating Work?

Electric underfloor heating has continued it’s growing trend and I’m finding more and more customers are asking me to install underfloor heating systems in their homes. I get asked all the time how it actually works and how much it costs. I wanted to use this blog post to explain how electric under floor heating systems work. I’ll explain how water underfloor heating systems work in a separate blog post.

First of all, why is it so popular? According to research by marketsandmarkets.com, the total underfloor heating market is expected to reach USD 7.90 Billion by 2020. That’s right – nearly USD 8 Billion! There has been a huge shift in the mindset of the global economy with a big emphasis placed on sustainability and efficiency. This is where electric underfloor heating wins. If installed correctly it is far more energy efficient then traditional central heating systems.

So What’s The Main Difference Between Radiators And Electric Underfloor Heating?

Radiators only heat the cold air in their immediate vicinity using convection. This hot air rises and then cools down. This air then falls again and is heated up again and rises again, then cools down, then falls again etc.. It does the job but the heat is not distributed evenly around the room so you do get warm spots and cold spots. This is especially true if the wrong sized radiator hasn’t been installed as the BTU heat loss hasn’t been calculated properly.

With underfloor heating, the whole floor is covered with the electric heating wire system so the floor acts like one big huge radiator. The wire heats up when the system is on, heats the floor which then provides evenly distributed radiant heat.

You get different types of electric underfloor heating such as a mat or foil system or a loose wire system. You also get different sizes in terms of heat outputs and wattage so that you can ensure that your room will be heated properly. It is very important to calculate the heat loss in your room correctly otherwise there’s a big risk that the room won’t be heated properly. If you’re not sure how to do this then give us a call and we can help.

A quick tip when considering electric underfloor heating is to install insulation boards. This helps to increase the room heat up time and it makes sure that heat energy isn’t lost by heating up the sub floor!

Isn’t Electric Underfloor Heating Expensive?

Surprisingly it’s relatively affordable so it’s definitely worth considering. There are many factors which contribute to the cost such as running time, room size, heat output and system type. A programmable room stat also helps as you can set times for when it comes on and turns off. Some of the stats are so advanced now that they actually suggest smarter ways to heat your home so that you save money!

Who Makes The Best Electric Underfloor Heating Systems?

Because of the size of the industry, there are lots of different manufacturers who probably all are just as good as each other. The tried and tested company who we normally always recommend are Warmup. They’re a huge global brand and their support and after sales service is amazing. We’d obviously recommend you to do your own due diligence and research before deciding on a manufacturer but Warmup is definitely worth shortlisting.

How Long Will it Take For My New Bathroom to be Fitted?

Looking to refurbish your bathroom? One of the most common questions I get is “how long will it take?”.

A perfectly reasonable question because you have to factor in how much time you need to take off of work and if it can be done whilst you’re away on holiday for example. Now I know this is an annoying answer but the truth is, it depends.

The general rule of thumb for a complete bathroom fit out is 10 days. Any shorter than the builders are probably cutting some corners somewhere along the line which is obviously a bad sign. Any longer than it’s likely that they’re taking their time so if you’re paying them on a day rate you’re probably getting charged more than you should be.
